Garden Ants

Ant infestations are most commonly found in summer when ants can appear through even the tiniest of cracks in buildings in order to gain access to a newly discovered food source. Ants will communicate this new discovery of food to other ants that are then also attracted, and hence creating a significant infestation. To reduce the risk of an ant infestation in your home, ensure that sugary foods are kept in a sealed container and that any food or drink spillages are cleaned up immediately.

Rodents (Rats & Mice)

There are several key precautions that can be taken to help avoid rodent infestations:

▪ Keep your home in good repair, rats and mice need only the narrowest of
gaps to squeeze through in order to gain entry.

▪ Do not leave exposed food or crumbs lying around your home as they will
  attract rodents.

▪ Remove potential nesting sites by keeping yards and gardens clean and tidy,
and by cutting back over grown areas.

▪ Ensure that all drain covers are securely fixed and in good repair leaving no
gaps through which rodents can appear.

▪ Seal any gaps around water and heating pipes, as well as installed kitchen
  appliances.

▪ Do not leave any household waste where rats or mice can gain access to it,
close dustbin lids and composters and do not feed wild birds to excess as
you may be feeding rodents as well.

▪ Keep a close eye on outside bird feeding stations clearing any food
that may have been spread around by the birds.

Flies

Houseflies are most commonly found where people work or live due to there being a readily available supply of food. Flies carry diseases with them and can cause food poisoning outbreaks.

To avoid a fly infestation:

▪ Ensure good overall hygiene in and around your home

▪ Clean drains frequently

▪ Cover all waste bins inside and outside of your home as these will provide an ideal breeding ground for flies.

Bedbugs

Bedbugs can be found anywhere that humans sleep within a property. During daytime, they hide away in cracks and crevices near to the sleeping area, and can often spread to neighboring rooms. To help reduce your risk of a bedbug infestation it is advised to:

▪ Thoroughly investigate any second hand furniture you may have purchased before bringing
  it into your home

▪ Closely check your bedding and around your mattress. Should you discover any infested items launder
these immediately in a hot soapy wash, usually at 60∞.

Remember: Bedbug infestations can be extremely difficult to eradicate using products available to the general public, it is always advised to contact a professional pest controller to ensure effective eradication.
