WaspsVespula Vulgaris (L), Vespula Germanica (L) These very common, yellow and black insects are well-known albeit unwelcome guests in houses, public buildings and public spaces during the British summer. They work in an organised society headed by a Queen. The adult wasps forage on insects, dead animals and, later on in the season, sugary high energy substances. Unfortunately this means that they target picnics and food establishments. They can sting, a habit that increases as the insects become more irritable with the onset of cooler weather and the ingestion of fermenting over-ripe fruit juices.
