Rabbit

Oryctolagus cuniculus

The rabbit clearly needs no introduction. Although not native to the UK, the Rabbit has adapted exceptionally well to the British Isles with almost legendary powers of reproduction! In 1953, Myxomatosis spread rapidly and wiped out 99% of the rabbit population. However, Rabbits are still numerous and may cause damage through digging and feeding activities, including the destruction of young trees and crops. They have, in extreme circumstances, caused buildings to become unstable due to the proximity of rabbit burrows and are a persistent problem on some allotments, golf courses, cemeteries and other public areas.
