Pharoah's Ant

Monomorium pharaonis

This tiny light brown ant (2mm) originates from the tropics and sub-tropics. It is only found indoors in the UK in warm areas including humid kitchens, hospitals, institutions and large urban housing blocks. It has a well-organised matriarchal society and nests of up to 100,000 insects have been found in extreme conditions. They can transfer dirty and unsavoury substances to clean food thus promulgating disease. If a nest comes under stress or attack, satellite nests will form in the local area. Therefore, professional help must be sought as the application of off-the-shelf insecticides results in the spread of the species. Professional Eradication, whilst achievable, may take slightly longer than anticipated due to the tenacity of this species.
