Mole

Talpa europaea

The Mole is abundant in mainland Britain but absent from Ireland. It favours deciduous woodland and permanent grasslands but will enter playing fields, parks, cemeteries, golf courses and private gardens. They are solitary animals and cause damage through molehills, which besides being unsightly in public areas, result in uneven ground leading to weeds. Molehills are not very popular with golfers or bowlers and can damage moving machinery including lawnmowers. In agricultural areas, soil from molehills may lead to spoilt and unpalatable silage. Sheep fed on this silage can acquire Listeriosis. Mole tunnels can also kill young plants through the destruction of their roots
