Grey SquirrelSciurus carolinensis The Grey Squirrel is the most destructive pest we deal with. Introduced to the UK between 1876 and 1929, its number exploded and it pushed out the now highly protected native Red Squirrel to a few small areas. They are superb climbers and live in areas wherever there are trees. They cause the most damage when they enter roof spaces to escape the cold. They then chew woodwork and ceilings, strip the insulation from electrical wiring, tear up fibreglass insulation and sometimes chew through water tanks causing severe flooding. In the garden, they take strawberries, apples and plums; they strip the bark for trees, raid bird nest for eggs or chicks, dig holes in lawns, raid birds' tables and may even carry off bird feeders. In woodland, they damage trees, including sycamore and beech, by stripping the bark, which may kill the tree eventually. We cannot stress enough the importance of excluding squirrels from your buildings. There is a range of control methods available for Grey Squirrels If you think you have squirrels, contact us now for advice and control. Conservation status |
