Fox

Vulpes vulpes

Needing little introduction, the Fox is widespread throughout mainland Britain in both rural and urban areas. Mainly active at night, it has adapted to living in close proximity to humans and is an expert food scavenger. It will hunt smaller prey but will often take food from areas including bird tables, roads (road kill), and compost heaps. The fox is usually blamed for raiding bins but shares this trait with dogs, cats and squirrels. Foxes will kill indiscriminately if they gain entry to poultry sheds: even when their appetite is satisfied. They may also kill small domestic pet but normally ignore cats and dogs. The noise that they make in the mating season (Jan – Feb) may be particularly annoying.

FOXES MAY NOT BE POISONED! (Protection of Animals Act 1911).
