Booklice or Psocids (F'oh Sids)

Order Psocoptera

Although eight to nine hundred species live outside, only a handful has been found to move indoors. These tiny insects (1 – 1.5mm) are often attracted by damp materials and foodstuffs that are usually starting to suffer from mould. High humidity areas encourage the mould that they eat. They don't normally feed on our food directly but may damage other substances including museum artefacts. In public areas, usually just their presence alone is grounds for complaint but they can be effectively treated by us.
